Getting around Budapest: what to check before you travel
Before exploring the city, sort out two things: how to reach your destination and which ticket you need. A little planning leaves more time for the visit itself.
Start with your route
BKK’s BudapestGO app offers journey planning with real-time information, as well as ticket and pass purchases. There is also a browser version for planning your journey. Official information about BudapestGO.
Check the route close to departure, particularly if it involves transfers. Your accommodation’s exact address and your first destination are useful starting points for planning the day.
Buying and validating are not always the same step
Single tickets need validation at the start of a journey. The method depends on whether your ticket is paper or digital, and the rules differ from those for daily travelcards and passes. Read the instructions for the ticket you choose and keep it available for inspection. BKK’s ticket types and validation guidance.
When choosing between single tickets and a travelcard, consider how many journeys and transfers you expect to make. Check current prices and coverage on the official website when you buy.
Arriving from the airport?
The 100E Airport Express links the airport and the city centre. It has its own fare arrangements, so do not assume a regular city ticket covers this journey. Current 100E ticket conditions and discounts.
Before setting off
- Check the stop, direction of travel and any transfers.
- Make sure your ticket covers the journey and you know how to use it.
- If using a digital ticket, charge your phone and check its connectivity requirements in advance.
